Transportation is blocking young people from work

In Northeast Ohio, many young adults have the skills, motivation, and job offers—but no reliable way to get to work.

Public transportation often doesn’t match shift schedules or reach job sites, and entry-level wages can’t cover the cost of a safe vehicle, insurance, and repairs. For too many, this means missed shifts, lost jobs, and stalled careers.

Road Worthy exists to remove that barrier.

We turn vehicles into reliable rides to work.

Road Worthy is a nonprofit program that brings together donors, auto dealers, trade schools, and financial supporters to help young workers get—and keep—good jobs.

1

Vehicles are donated or purchased

Auto dealers and individuals donate used vehicles, and financial contributions allow us to purchase additional used cars that meet our program’s specifications.

2

Students make them Road Worthy

Matrix Trade Institute automotive and collision repair students inspect, repair, and prepare each car as part of their hands-on training.

3

Young workers apply

Trade school graduates who are recommended by their programs and have a full-time job can apply for a Road Worthy reliable transportation grant.

4

Cars launch careers

Approved applicants receive a safe, dependable vehicle and support with basic car ownership—so they can reliably get to work, build stability, and advance.

One Road Worthy vehicle can change multiple lives.

For young workers:

  • Reliable transportation to and from work
  • Greater chance to keep jobs and earn promotions
  • Support with financial literacy and life skills
  • A stronger path to independence and stability

For students & employers:

  • Matrix students gain real-world automotive and collision repair experience
  • Local employers gain more reliable, work-ready employees
  • Northeast Ohio gains a stronger, more resilient workforce.

Auto dealers: your inventory can fuel the workforce.

Your trade-ins, aging inventory, and auction-bound vehicles can become reliable transportation for young adults starting their careers. Road Worthy makes it easy for dealerships to turn underused assets into community and workforce impact.

As a dealer, you can:

  • Donate used vehicles with repairable value
  • Designate a portion of wholesale or auction-bound units to Road Worthy
  • Provide in-kind support like parts, diagnostics, or service expertise
  • Sponsor a group of vehicles or repair costs through financial support

Your old car can be someone’s first real shot at work.

If you have a vehicle you’re not using, it can be life-changing for a young person who has a job but no way to get there. Road Worthy takes your donated vehicle, makes it safe and reliable, and gets it into the hands of a young worker who’s ready to move forward.

When you donate a vehicle, you:

  • Remove a major barrier to steady work for a young person
  • Support local businesses that rely on dependable employees
  • Help train the next generation of skilled technicians
  • Turn an underused asset into lasting community impact

Trade school graduates: this is your key togetting to work.

If you’ve completed a trade or technical program and have a full-time job, Road Worthy may be able to help you secure reliable transportation so you can stay on track at work.

To qualify for the Road Worthy reliable transportation grant, applicants typically must:

  1. 1
Be a graduate of a participating trade or technical program.
